What is psychotherapy?
Psychotherapy is talk therapy, where you share, open up and talk with a trained therapist about stress, difficult feelings, thoughts, and concerns that come up in life. The hope is to help and support you in better understanding yourself, your emotions, your situation in life and explore ways to help you cope and better manage your difficulties so you may live a fulfilling and meaningful life.
Why online therapy?
Online therapy appointments utilize the same evidence-based treatment methods as in-person therapy. The only difference is this will be at the comfort of your own home. Online and virtual psychotherapy has gained popularity and has been shown by various studies to be just as effective as in-person therapy due to convenience, accessibility, comfort, increased engagement/lower drop-out rate, and continuity of care.
Navigating the unpredictability of modern life can be overwhelming and stressful, but online therapy offers unique benefits that makes your healing journey easier and more accessible for you.
Are you registered to practice psychotherapy?
In Ontario, there are 6 different regulated healthcare professionals that is legally permitted to practice the act of psychotherapy. Registered Social Workers are among the six regulated professionals.
I am a Registered Social Worker (RSW) with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW). As a RSW, we are permitted to provide psychotherapy services and can also use the title “psychotherapist.” Please refer to the OCSWSSW website for more details on the controlled act of psychotherapy provided by RSW.
How you counsel within an ethical framework?
As therapists, regardless of the diverse clients we serve, it is essential to integrate both standard ethical principles of counseling and culturally specific considerations to provide safe and effective care. Registered Social Workers (RSWs) who are registered with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW or the College) must practice in accordance with the College’s mandate to protect the public. Jennifer consistently adheres to the College’s Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice, reviewing them annually.
Key ethical principles Jennifer considers in her practice
- Understanding the scope of practice as an RSW
- Maintaining professional and therapeutic relationships with clients while setting appropriate boundaries
- Respecting clients’ self-determination and their right to make decisions about their well-being
- Collaborating with clients in the therapeutic process, ensuring privacy and confidentiality
- Safeguarding records and client files
- Providing transparency regarding fees and the nature of the work
- Addressing any issues that may arise in therapy
- Minimizing power imbalances to ensure that these do not interfere with the therapeutic process
Why choose me as your therapist?
I believe my own ethnic and cultural experience allows me to understand you and relate to your struggles if you identify with the Asian community. I know the weight of expectations—whether it was about academic success, career choices, or even family dynamics. I understand how these pressures can create a sense of conflict, especially when trying to balance personal desires with cultural values.
I am passionate about helping you understand and manage your struggles, whether it be anxiety, low self-esteem, depression, or relationship and communication issues. To help you make sense of and finding the root cause of your struggles that may stem from having a difficult past and childhood.
I aim to hold space for you and to help you feel seen and heard in a time when you feel there is no support or perhaps feeling unheard/unseen for most of your life. I am committed to understanding your unique story and assist you in gaining more insight into your patterns and tendencies that keeps you feeling stuck and continues to feed into your anxiety and depression.
My aim is to create a safe and secure space for you to talk about your current issues while gaining some clarity and understanding of where it might be stemming from through past wounds, hurts, hardships and childhood difficulties.
I am a strong believer that every person has the ability to earn security, self-confidence, feel content in life and develop a strong sense of self through the work they do with themselves. Every person is accountable for their own self-growth.
